Noticing

2023, Nogojiwanong (Peterborough)

The works displayed here represent snippets of my year spent in this place, on Michi Saagiig Anishinaabeg Territory. Time spent noticing, looking closer, noticing more, looking up, noticing more, stopping for a sip of coffee, and then my coffee going cold because I’m in the garden in my crocs and underwear, picking slugs and noticing once again.

This work further reflects a deep shift in my art practice. Away from production, repetitive strain, reproducing, and scaling up. Towards less. Tending to single pieces over long periods of time and exploring new mediums. Revisiting old work. Same as before in the way of drawing my ideas and inspiration from the trees, birds, and other non-human beings who live here. Different in the way of leaning deeper into the process of making art– finding value and meaning in the relationships built, lessons learned, and joy felt, as I move from concept to “finished” piece.

50% of profits from this show go to mutual aid and grassroots work. Specifically, 25% will go to Giwaabamin, an Indigenous led street clinic in Tkaronto, and 25% to mutual aid callouts from Indigenous folks fleeing wildfires in the Northwest Territories. This is something I’m able to do, and so, as an uninvited guest, settler, and Treaty person, I will.
